# Capability switches explained

Configure Python, charts, user clarification, and web search capabilities.

The Capabilities section of the Configuration tab has four switches that determine **which tools the agent can use** when answering. They are independent; enable only what you need.

| Switch | Description in the interface | Default |
| ------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------- |
| Python interpreter | Data transformations, statistical analysis, and other operations difficult to express in SQL | On |
| Chart visualization | Create visualizations for query results | On |
| User clarification | Allow the agent to ask the user for confirmation | On |
| Web search | Query public information outside data sources and store results as dataframes | Off |

## Python interpreter

**When enabled**: the agent can execute Python for tasks awkward to express in SQL, such as cleaning data, statistical tests, and constructing intermediate results.

**When disabled**: only read-only SQL remains. Uploading Excel / CSV attachments in conversations does not depend on this switch.

**Where code runs**: code does not run in the server's main process. It is executed by a separate Atbox sandbox (Go service + CPython). Each execution gets a fresh disposable process, isolated using chroot, no\_new\_privs, seccomp, and a reduced-privilege UID; these protections take effect on Linux. Execution has a timeout limit. When concurrency is full, it explicitly returns “Sandbox saturated” rather than silently waiting in a queue. See [How AskTable works](https://docs.asktable.com/en/architecture) for mechanism details.

## Chart visualization

**When enabled**: the agent automatically chooses charts for query results: line charts for time trends, bars for category comparisons, pies for proportions, and scatter plots for relationships between two quantities.

**When disabled**: answers contain data tables and written conclusions without charts. This suits cases focused on numbers where charts would distract, and can save some generation time.

## User clarification

**When enabled** (recommended): if key conditions are missing, such as the time range, granularity, or whether to exclude refunds, the agent **asks you first** and provides selectable options instead of guessing and proceeding with calculations.

**When disabled**: the agent makes reasonable assumptions from available semantics and context, calculates the answer directly, and states its assumptions in the conclusion.

This switch is important for accuracy. Disabling it does not necessarily make answers wrong, but it makes changed or assumed definitions harder to notice. Keep it enabled unless you know exactly what you are asking and do not want interruptions.

**Tip：Keep clarification enabled**

Disabling clarification does not immediately make answers wrong, but it becomes harder to notice when a different definition has been assumed. Of the four switches, this has the greatest effect on how trustworthy results are.

## Web search

**When enabled**: the agent can retrieve public information outside its data sources. Results become a dataframe for further analysis, for example to compare against external data.

**Why it is off by default**: a system administrator must first configure a search service in system settings. **Until configured, the switch is disabled**, with the description “Web search is not configured. Contact a system administrator to configure it in system settings.” After setup, return here to enable it.

## Key constraints

| Item | Value or behavior |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Switch location | Agent details → “Configuration” → “Capabilities” |
| Scope | All entry points for the agent share the same configuration: web conversations, Feishu or Slack channels, scheduled tasks, and embeds |
| Python interpreter | Disabling it leaves only read-only SQL; Excel / CSV attachment uploads in conversations do not depend on this switch |
| Chart visualization | Disabling it returns only tables and text |
| User clarification | Disabling it lets the agent make assumptions and state them in its conclusion |
| Web search | Off by default; disabled until configured by an administrator |

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | How to identify it | What to do |
| ------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Answers have no charts | Results contain only tables and text | Check chart visualization is on; the question may also be unsuitable for charting |
| Agent calculates without asking | Missing conditions produce an answer with assumptions instead of clarification | Check that user clarification is enabled |
| Cannot enable web search | Switch is gray and says web search is not configured | Ask a system administrator to configure the search service in system settings |
| Python execution fails | Python timeout or sandbox saturation is reported | Simplify the code or reduce the data volume; saturation indicates high concurrency, so retry later |
